The Short Answer
Can a head spa help with dandruff?
It can clear away visible flakes and buildup during your visit and leave your scalp feeling clean and calm. It does not cure dandruff or replace the shampoo routine that keeps flakes down at home.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) describes dandruff as small pieces of dry skin flaking off the scalp and says that, for most people, it does not require medical attention.
Where a scalp treatment fits
When your shampoo keeps flakes mostly in check but the scalp still feels coated or tight, and you want an unhurried reset. The head spa vs scalp treatment guide sets it beside a relaxation head spa.
The Treatment
What happens in the Dandruff Relief Scalp Therapy?
Three parts: deep exfoliation, soothing botanical care and a targeted scalp cleanse, over 90 minutes in a private room.
What each part does
Exfoliation loosens visible flakes and product buildup, botanical care leaves the scalp feeling soothed and comfortable, and the cleanse lifts what the exfoliation has loosened. Your specialist also suggests a routine for home, because flakes usually return without one.
Tell your specialist first
Mention your shampoo, including any medicated one, and any scalp or skin conditions, allergies or fragrance sensitivities before your treatment begins.

Telling Them Apart
Is it dandruff, a dry scalp or product buildup?
They look alike and call for different care. The AAD says dandruff usually improves with a dandruff shampoo and a dry scalp with a gentle, non-medicated one. Use the table as a rough guide, not a diagnosis.
| What you notice | Often | What usually helps | At GK Hair Haven |
|---|---|---|---|
| White flakes on hair or dark clothes | Dandruff | A dandruff shampoo, used as directed | Dandruff Relief Scalp Therapy |
| Small dry flakes after harsh products or dry air | Dry scalp | A gentle, non-medicated shampoo | Chinese Herbal Head Spa |
| A dull, coated feel at the roots | Product buildup | A thorough scalp cleanse | Purifying Oily Scalp Detox |
| Swollen, discolored patches; greasy, yellowish scale | Possibly seborrheic dermatitis | A board-certified dermatologist | See a doctor first |
| Raised patches with a silvery scale; burning | Possibly scalp psoriasis | A board-certified dermatologist | See a doctor first |
Know the Limits
When is flaking a job for a dermatologist?
When it will not settle with a dandruff shampoo, spreads beyond the scalp, or comes with redness or pain. MedlinePlus also advises seeing a provider when patches crust, drain fluid or become very red or painful.
Dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis?
They are related. The AAD says dandruff may be considered its mildest form, but seborrheic dermatitis, unlike dandruff, causes swelling and discolored skin. It has no cure; a dermatologist's treatment can ease the itch and lessen the rash.
Signs to see a dermatologist first
Check with a board-certified dermatologist before booking any scalp treatment if you notice any of these:
- Sudden, patchy or rapid hair loss
- Hair loss with itching, burning, pain or tenderness
- Red, scaly or oozing patches on the scalp
- Flaking that does not improve with a dandruff shampoo
- Scaling beyond the scalp, such as the eyebrows, ears or sides of the nose
- Hair loss together with tiredness, feeling cold or a change in weight
Cadence
How many sessions do people usually book?
There is no set course. One visit lifts the flakes and buildup there now; how soon they return depends on your scalp and home routine. Book again when flakes and the coated feeling return.
Something lighter in between
The Classic Head Spa (60 minutes, $99) covers a scalp analysis, a deep cleanse, a head and scalp massage and a Dyson blow-dry.

At Home
How should I care for my scalp between visits?
With a dandruff shampoo used the way the AAD advises: matched to your hair, and stepped up only if flakes persist.
Match the routine to your hair
Fine, straight hair or an oily scalp may need washing daily, with the dandruff shampoo about twice a week; coarse, curly or coily hair usually needs the dandruff shampoo only about once a week, on the scalp alone. Coal-tar shampoos can make the scalp more sun-sensitive, so shade it from the South Florida sun.
When flakes come back, try these in order
- Wash your hair regularly; the AAD says mild dandruff can usually be treated at home this way.
- If not, use a dandruff shampoo with zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, ketoconazole or a similar active, as its label directs; some need 5 to 10 minutes on the scalp.
- If one shampoo does not help, alternate it with one that has a different active ingredient.
- When flakes and buildup return, book the Dandruff Relief Scalp Therapy again for a thorough reset.
- If flakes still do not go away, or become severe, see a board-certified dermatologist.
