The Short Answer
Can a head spa help with hair loss?
Not as a treatment. A scalp treatment can leave your scalp clean and comfortable and your hair feeling softer, but it does not find or treat the cause of hair loss, and it does not regrow hair.
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) puts finding the cause first, through a dermatologist's questions, a scalp exam and, if needed, a blood test or scalp biopsy.
Shedding is not always hair loss
The AAD says it is normal to shed between 50 and 100 hairs a day, and heavier shedding usually shows up a few months after a stressful event such as an illness, surgery or giving birth. A dermatologist can tell the two apart.
The Treatment
What is the Hair Loss Strengthening Therapy?
A 90-minute scalp-care ritual with ginger and natural botanical ingredients, for guests noticing thinning or extra shedding, designed to leave the scalp clean and comfortable and the hair feeling softer.
Who books it
Guests who have noticed a wider part or a thinner ponytail and want their scalp looked after while they find out why. If you already see a dermatologist, tell your specialist what you have been prescribed.
The Ingredient
Why does GK Hair Haven use ginger in a scalp treatment?
Because ginger belongs to a long tradition of East Asian hair care and suits a botanical scalp ritual, alongside the other plant ingredients in the treatment.
If ginger does not suit your skin
Say so before the treatment begins, along with any sensitivity to botanical ingredients or fragrance.
Expectations
What results can I realistically expect?
A scalp that feels clean and comfortable, hair that feels softer and looks well cared for, and 90 quiet minutes in a private room. You notice all three the same day.
How to get the most from it
Tell your specialist what your dermatologist has recommended, keep to the routine they set, and book the ritual whenever you want your scalp looked after between appointments.
What does the research on scalp massage show?
No good evidence that it grows hair. In a 2016 study, nine men used a scalp-massage device on one side of the head for 4 minutes a day. After 24 weeks those strands were slightly thicker than at the start (0.085 mm to 0.092 mm) but no different from the untouched side, and growth rate did not change. The authors, part-funded by a hair-care company, call the effect unclear; the head spa vs scalp treatment guide has more.
Effective treatment for hair loss begins with finding the cause.
See a Doctor First
When should I see a dermatologist about hair loss?
Before booking, if the loss is sudden, patchy or comes with other symptoms. Patchy loss can be alopecia areata, which NIAMS says has no cure but has treatments, from a doctor, that help hair grow back more quickly. See a board-certified dermatologist first if you notice any of these:
- Sudden, patchy or rapid hair loss
- Hair loss with itching, burning, pain or tenderness
- Red, scaly or oozing patches on the scalp
- Flaking that does not improve with a dandruff shampoo
- Scaling beyond the scalp, such as the eyebrows, ears or sides of the nose
- Hair loss together with tiredness, feeling cold or a change in weight
If your hair is thinning, in this order
- Note the pattern: sudden or gradual, patchy or all over, and what happened a few months before.
- See a board-certified dermatologist to find the cause.
- Start any treatment they recommend.
- Then, if you like, book the Hair Loss Strengthening Therapy as cosmetic care and tell your specialist what you use.
Medical Care
How is this different from PRP or medical hair restoration?
They are different kinds of care. PRP, prescription medicines and hair transplants are medical treatments from physicians; GK Hair Haven offers none of them.
